An afternoon with the Graham family in New Norfolk | Hobart family photographer, Katinka Smith

Autumn is a beautiful time of year, so where better to do an outdoor family session that in New Norfolk amongst the lovely yellowing landscape! It was a beautiful afternoon, with amazing light and wonderful weather. It did threaten to rain and a couple of times we had some light spitting – argh! But nothing was going to deter Jet. He was there to run and have fun; rain, hail or shine!

An outdoor family session full of love and fun | Hobart family photographer, Katinka Smith

A couple of weeks ago I got to catch up with this lovely little family to capture their bonds and love for them to cherish together. When I photograph a family, a baby or a child, I take on the point of view of the child. I want to capture images that they can look back on in 10, 20, 30 years time and see the love and bonds that existed in their family. We are generally nostalgic about our childhoods, I try to immortalise those connections to keep forever. Also as parents we are nostalgic about our children’s childhood and these special little babies that grow into independent people of their own. So I head into a photoshoot with all of that on my mind, and I want to capture those true, real connections that are unique to these families that invite me into their lives.

This family are no exception. So much love, so much fun.

A before and after:
We lost light FAST in this session and to keep my shutter speed at 200 (fast so that I can freeze motion of running children) and keep my f stop deep enough to have everyone in focus, I pushed my ISO up to 1000 to expose the image (the other option is to use flash). My new 5DmkII handles high ISO so well! I was very happy. My 7D would have made a meal of ISO this high. As it was later and we had lost the sun the images from this part were very cold and dark, so I warmed them up to give them some life and to match the rest of the images from the afternoon that had gorgeous golden afternoon glow. The top image is straight out of camera and the bottom image is the final edit. (This is also why I never give out raw or SOOC images ever from a session. To me that is only a quarter of the job, it would be like going to a restaurant and the chef giving you the ingredients on a plate for you to do it yourself. The bottom image is the photo from the camera brought to life with my creative vision. That is the biggest part of my job 🙂 )before after

Introducing Miss Eleni Mei | Hobart newborn photographer

A few Sundays ago I caught up with this lovely new family to photograph their new baby girl. We planned for a session in St David’s Park, but the rain was just enough to have us heading indoors for a coffee and a few more photos in the shelter of a local Hobart establishment, who were VERY accommodating. Thanks guys 🙂

Miss Eleni Mei was super sweet. I got to catch up with her again tonight and my gosh she has grown. Her parents have approved a small sneak peek for you all. Enjoy!

Beautiful little slideshow here. The song featured is called ‘Happy’ by Secrets in Stereo

Introducing Baby Kobi | Hobart baby photographer

I recently photographed gorgeous baby Kobi with his mum and dad. This is one of those super special sessions as I was friends with mum in Primary school, she lived 4 houses down the road from me growing up. So it’s awesome to see her all grown up and being an amazing mum to baby Kobi.

Now let me tell you about baby Kobi…he is a HOOT! Such a funny little dude with the BEST smiles and little laughs. He cracked me up! I was even laughing while editing his photos, they took me back! haha

Enjoy this wonderful little man.

An afternoon maternity session | Hobart maternity photographer

On Saturday afternoon I photographed this lovely couple, Liz and Justin and their ‘furry first born’ Franklin. Franklin is going to be a great ‘big brother’ to a lovely baby girl very soon! It was such a nice session outside in the gorgeous evening light. I love to tell a story for my special clients and so maternity sessions to me are more than just about the belly. I like to document your family as it is right now, the love and bonds that you share while anticipating the arrival of your new child. I am so happy that Liz and Justin decided to bring Franklin along, dogs are very much apart of my family, so I LOVE photographing families with their special furry family members. It feels more complete to me 🙂

Enjoy your sneak peek Liz and Justin

The Big Reveal – Delecia and Simon | gender reveal photography by Katinka Smith

A little while ago I ran a casting call for a couple that did not yet know the sex of their baby, but who wanted to find out. Delecia and her family won my casting call and today we had their session. This was of course for a gender reveal photo session!

Delecia went along to her scan on Thursday and did a FABULOUS job not finding out the sex of their baby. Staff at Womens Imaging phoned me to let me know the verdict as Delecia didn’t trust herself with the envelope of truth! hehe. So, armed with the knowledge I planned their session and today I revealed their baby’s gender in a special little photo session…but not before photographing them exactly as they are right now, a family of 3 expecting their new baby.

Congratulations you three!!

Gender Reveal photo session featuring the Westwood family | Hobart Photographer, Katinka Smith

This afternoon the weather gave us the TINIEST break in the rain to photograph a very special little session for my friends, the Westwood family. On Tuesday Jo and Steve went along to their 20 week scan and rather than finding out the sex of their baby right there and then, they had the sonographer write down the baby’s sex and seal it in an envelope. Jo handed me the envelope at lunchtime Tuesday and I started to plan for the session. I was entrusted with the knowledge of the sex of the baby, an honour, thank you Jo and Steve!

So here is the story of the Westwood family. This is who they are right now as they anticipate the arrival of their new baby, and this is the very moment that they found out the sex of their baby 🙂

I hope you enjoy this series of images as much as I do. Feel free to leave comments and well wishes for this beautiful family x

Master Seb, 3.5 and Miss Nina 1.5 | Children photography, Hobart Tasmania

Last Friday I very very excitedly purchased a new lens. This has been my dream lens FOREVER (well it feels like it, but really, it’s been about 5 years). A brand spanking new 70-200 2.8 IS II. Oh my goodness it is rocking my socks! I am in awe of the images I can now produce. I have an outdoor family session coming up this Saturday and so I have been practicing with it to really learn how to nail portraits with it. I am definitely glad that I decided to practice because it has taken some getting used to! All of my first images were very slightly out of focus, I was very disappointed, but even more determined. So I have taken my children to the Salmon Ponds two days in a row to practice on them. (The Salmon Ponds are so beautiful!). So here are some of my first shots out of my new lens. Please note I did not dress them with ‘photosession’ in mind, but rather ‘we are going to get messy today and mummy needs to practice on you!’ haha, so these are purely test images. But do I love them? heck yes! These will be going in the family album! Messy hair or not, we had a blast 🙂

I am so happy with the images from today, I nailed it every time, hooray! So look out Costin family on Saturday, you have lens awesomeness coming your way!

So, allow me to introduce MY children. Miss Nina is very defiant, independent and stubborn. I have NO IDEA where she got ANY of those traits from! You’ll notice a red spot on her lip. That is where she had an argument with the concrete on Saturday morning, right before our very own family photos – ARGH! Don’t be fooled by her tough exterior, she is super snuggly, loves to sing with me and her favourite place to be is in my arms, reading a book and snuggling her horsey.

Sebastian, master 3.5 is…well..THREE and all of the wonderful things that goes along with that. But underneath all of that he is SO helpful, caring and loving. His favourite place to be is right by my side offering to help in any way that he can, he is so sweet! He is also at that ‘pull silly faces’ stage. Can you tell? Yes, even photographers children go through that stage, as frustrating as it is 😉

The Nesbitt family | Hobart family photographer, Katinka Smith.

Two Sundays ago I photographed this gorgeous family! It was a wonderfully fun session and we had amazing light and great conditions! We have had to reschedule this session so many times due to the weather or illness. In fact I went along to the session with a nice puffy swollen eye, hayfever induced I believe. But there was no way I was going to reschedule again, not when the weather was so amazing! Here is a little sneak peek of your images, I think it was worth the wait to make sure we had THIS light.

A fresh winter outdoor family photography session | family photographer, Hobart Tasmania

On Sunday I met this lovely family for an outdoors lifestyle family photography session. I have known this family for nearly 3 years now! Crazy how fast it has gone! Big sister Lucy is just 2 weeks older than my son and 1 year old Alex is 4 weeks older than my daughter. We are in the same mother’s group (the best mother’s group EVER by the way) and have met almost weekly for nearly 3 years. It’s been wonderful.

I LOVE these types of sessions. It was a little bit chilly but that did not deter us! I phoned mum before the session and suggested a couple of wardrobe alterations – namely gumboots and coats! We had a blast and I am a dog person, so having the family dog along on the shoot was fabulous! Enjoy the sneak peek!
