Nathan and Az, a special father and son session by Hobart photographer, Katinka Smith

I’d love you to meet Nathan and 5 year old Asaiah (Az). They have a wonderful father and son bond as you can see below.

It was wonderful meeting and photographing Nathan and Az. You can see how much Nathan enjoys being with son. Az is full of life, it is as though he is committed to squeezing every drop out of life, he’s going to live it all and leave no stone unturned. He is such an exciting little guy and a joy to be around. My aim for our session was to document Nathan and Az being a dad and a son. If you know my usual family imagery, then you know that I don’t want contrived, cheesy posed stuff that isn’t YOU. So as always, I wanted authentic and real interactions and images, only this time it felt more important than ever to capture these two people exactly as they are with each other, exactly as they would remember it themselves, because Nathan has aggressive brain cancer and so his time with Az might be short. He is already exceeding the life expectancy that he was given when he was diagnosed 3 years ago, so every day with Az is a real blessing.

So Nathan and Az played at the park, horsed around by the river, they played light sabres with sticks and rock paper scissors on the grass. Then we wrapped it up with an ice-cream and a stroll on Kingston beach. Even if I wasn’t there, I reckon they would have had a pretty cool father and son afternoon out.

Would I photograph an extended family session at the beach, followed up with some backyard shenanigans? Heck yes I would!! You know me, you know that nothing makes me happier than imagery that is real and authentic to a family. I want to see the love, the bonds and the connections; the stuff that we remember the most from a time that truly is fleeting. For the Evans family the beach is important to them and how they play and they had their cousins to play with too.

I think cousins are so important, I love ALL 30-something of mine, so it was great to do photograph a session with cousins! So off we went for a stroll to the beach. As soon as we set foot on the beach it immediately rained and we had to shelter under some rocky overhangs. It didn’t take long to pass and then we had brilliant sunshine to play in which sent me scrambling with camera settings thanks to the changing light conditions. That’s Tassie weather for you!!

Back at their house we got to have a little play in the BEST CUBBY IN THE WORLD – yep, I’m calling it! These kids are going to grow up with some of the coolest memories from their childhood. I’m considering packing up and moving to the beach too! Here’s some highlights from this lovely little lifestyle family session.

The Waite family! {Furbabies} | Hobart photographer, Katinka Smith

If you knew me before I had children you knew I was a dog person. I LOVE my poochies and I have two furry firstborns of my own. Before I had children I was a dog trainer and I LOVED meeting and getting to know lots of different poochies and their human slaves ;-)! When I was pregnant with my first child I had to leave off the dog training and I do miss it dearly. So I love it when I can photograph poochies in a session, usually they are part of the family, welcoming in the first born ‘skin kids’, so it was a first for me to have a session exclusively for the fur children! I loved this session and it was a pleasure to finally meet Kittila and Luna, two little fur babies that I have watched grow up via facebook!

Crystal turns ONE | Hobart family photographer, Katinka Smith

I recently spent some time with darling Crystal and her family to capture some memories of her turning one! (You can view images from her newborn session way back here!) We started with a few casual lifestyle images on mummy and daddy’s bed, then a colourful rainbow cake smash followed up with some portraits in a local park. A few weeks ago I visited Tim, Chantelle and their three children in their home. First off we set about capturing some studio portraits with the portable studio, and then we went outside to play in their ‘backyard’! How cool is this backyard – what children wouldn’t want to grow up in their own little piece of AWESOME! We had a lot of fun – here is a little overview of our time together.

Another shoot that I kept under wraps until the images were gifted as Christmas presets…so I’m pleased to share with you the Wakefield family!!

I have photographed Mark and Penni exchange vows at their wedding, have fun at the beach in a ‘trash the dress’ session, their anticipation in a maternity session, their new love in Louella’s newborn session and now as a growing family. Introducing 3 month old Miss Amelia | Hobart baby photographer, Katinka Smith

I had the pleasure of meeting Miss Amelia a few weeks ago along with her mum Bec and her Nanny, Gail. Poppy (Rick) wasn’t able to join us for the photos, but Gail and Rick have been a wonderful support to Bec, because, you see, Amelia has a special story.  Amelia has a big brother, Noah. Noah was born sleeping at 32 weeks.

This is Bec and Amelia’s story as told by Bec.

“I’ve always wanted to be a mum and in 2011 I decided that it was the right time. I was determined to not let the fact that I was single get in the way!!! So with the help of Tas IVF I fell pregnant first try with Noah and was so excited. I was even more excited when I found out he was going to be a little boy.

At 32 weeks I found out I would be going to hosptial to give birth to my little man sleeping. It shattered my world and my heart. A week later I did what no parent should have to, and that was to bury my son. Losing a baby is something that happens to someone else, I never thought that it would happen to me.

6 months after Noah was born I fell pregnant again, again with thanks to Tas IVF. I had very mixed emotions and was terrified I would lose this baby too. When I found out that I was expecting a girl I was quietly relieved.

When Amelia was born it felt like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. I finally had my rainbow and she was alive and healthy. I could start to be happy again.

My heart will always have a piece missing, but Amelia has helped me to learn to live again. She has an amazing guardian angel looking over her. I talk about my son all of the time and when people ask if Amelia is my first, I say no. I am a very proud mummy of two babies.

I also volunteer for Pregnancy Loss Australia in honour of Noah and donate bears in his memory every Christmas and birthday.”

This is Bec, her daughter Amelia and her wonderful mum Gail (Nanny).

A beautiful morning with the Pryor family | Hobart family photographer, Katinka Smith

In early August I caught up with this incredibly gorgeous family. Andrew, Katy and Master Henry, for an outdoor family photography session. If you are a regular follower of my work then you will know that I aim to photograph natural interactions, connections and bonds between my clients. That’s the stuff that I LOVE!! These three were complete naturals at being…natural! Right from the get go, they were into it and right at home just being themselves. Awesome! Henry wasn’t a BIG fan of sitting still (like most toddlers), but we played some fabulous games and hunted for gumnuts to get Mstr Henry on board.

Thanks for sharing your family with me Andrew and Katy, you three are awesome!

The Burke family, a wonderful day in Allen’s Rivulet | by Hobart family photographer, Katinka Smith

A few weeks ago I traveled down to Allens Rivulet, Tasmania, to photograph some dear friends of mine, Daniel and Anna, with their two children, Essie and Henry. I had my work cut out for me, it’s not everyday I set out to photograph a family with a nearly 3yo, a 15 month old, a dog and a horse! haha. I’m also allergic to horses and had a scary incident as a child, so you would think I would have gone prepared hey? Nope. in true Katinka fashion I completely forgot to take any kind of antihistamines with me and was left to just *hope* that I wouldn’t succumb to some kind of allergy attack. It turns out that over the years I have gotten better and I just had the regular kind of allergy reaction to Toby – runny nose and eyes etc. Phew! I even found out that I quite like horses, I just need to stay a number of metres away 🙂 Anna is an animal lover, so having two of her special fur children join in on the session was also very meaningful. Harvey the boxer is their ‘furry firstborn’ and Toby is Anna’s beloved horse. The location that we chose is where Toby is agisted and it allowed the children to run free in the paddocks, which is one of their favourite past times.

Daniel and I were great friends in high school, college and beyond. We used to go bushwalking a lot though we were often underprepared and usually freezing. Ha! So it was pretty clear that a location in the outdoors was going to be meaningful to Dan. I also met Anna in year 11 or 12. Dan and I were at Guildford Young in Glenorchy, and Anna was at the Hobart campus. As these things happen, activities span the campuses, friendships are made and Dan and Anna mixed in the same circles through mutual friends. In 2001, when we all had our licences and were adjusting to university life after graduating from GYC, Dan and Anna got together. And the rest, as they say, is history!

Dan and Anna are very good at teasing each other and most definitely aren’t into PDA, but it is obvious to anyone that they are a perfect pair and have a beautiful love. Over the years they have added dogs and cats and birds and a horse to their lives; gotten married; bought a house, sold a house and bought a house again; traveled overseas and most recently they have added two beautiful children to their incredible world, Essie and Henry.

I don’t need to tell you the rest, because a picture paints a thousand words…and there are a few thousand words below for you to enjoy. The slideshow contains many more images from the session as well as some extra words – Dan and Anna’s very own special words to each other and to their children.
