Introducing sweet baby Caleb | Hobart newborn photographer, Katinka Smith

A little while ago I hung out with my good friend Kel and her family to capture some lifestyle images of sweet baby Caleb. Here are some images from our time together.

Introducing Miss Scarlett | Hobart Maternity and Newborn Photographer, Katinka Smith

I recently had the pleasure of working with Adam and Danita capturing memories of their pregnancy and their new little girl Scarlett. Adam and I went to school together so it’s always wonderful to reconnect with school mates during such special occasions. Here are a selection of images from their maternity and newborn sessions.

Introducing sweet baby Felix | Hobart newborn photographer, Katinka Smith

I recently had the pleasure of photographing gorgeous newborn Felix in his home with his mum Abby and dad Nick. It was clear that Abby and Nick had put so much effort into the nursery that I made sure to include some images in their set – I love nurseries that are created with love and effort like this! I’m the first to admit that I am seriously lacking in the interior design space, so I admire others that are so clever!

When Nick came out in a shirt for the parent shots with a logo on it my first thought was ‘Um Nick, logos are distracting’, and then I quickly realised exactly what I was looking at – ART! I have seen Nick’s work before, but I didn’t make the connection until that moment. Nick Hills is an awesome Tasmanian artist and the design on the back of his shirt is one of his designs – btw, you can buy them, check out the Tassie clothing company ‘Burial Brand’ HERE for designs by Nick Hills and other local Australian artists! So of course his shirt with his design HAD to feature in photos with his son, how could it not! So we especially did the pose with Felix’s head resting on Nick’s shoulder so that two special things that he has created could be featured in the one photo together. 🙂

Congratulations Nick and Abby, Felix is divine!

Introducing Miss Mila | Hobart newborn photographer, Katinka Smith

I can’t tell you how much I love to incorporate my clients homes into their photo sessions – especially in newborn sessions. So many of you take so much time and care to carefully plan a special space to welcome your beautiful newborn baby home to. You have special sleeping arrangements that work just for you – and that may be fleeting, like a Bassinet in the master bedroom or a special cot. Our children are babies for a short time and just as I think it is important to capture our little people at this special time, I also love to capture their surroundings, just as it is right at that moment in time. The beauty of being able to photograph your newborn baby in their own home, rather than in a studio environment, is that I can immerse myself in your environment and incorporate these elements into your images – which I LOVE to do. Many families have beautiful heirloom items that have been handed down and were often that precious sleeping space carefully chosen, or made, a few short decades ago by those excited expectant first time parents, who are now anticipating their first grandchild – who will also sleep in that same special bassinet or cot.

Memories and nostalgia are what connects us to our past, are a big part of who we are, are what binds us to the people that we love and are, after-all, one of the reasons why we invest in photography – to create memories that we can physically hold onto. I love it when I can present to my clients the full picture of who they are – inclusive of their home.

Please meet baby Mila along with her mum and dad – photographed in their home a few weeks ago. A beautiful little girl and a wonderful mum and dad! Hills-01 copy 12

Introducing baby Crystal | Hobart newborn photographer, Katinka Smith

A few weeks ago I photographed Miss Crystal and her family. Crystal is a very special rainbow baby. A Rainbow baby is a baby born after the storm; the storm of pregnancy loss. Crystal has a big sister Angel. Angel would have turned 1 last week.

I have known Adam and Angie for about 12 years and we were excited last year in the lead up to the birth to their first born child. We knew they would make excellent parents. However, life took a different path and Angel was born sleeping. Six babies are born sleeping every day in Australia and 1 in 4 pregnancies end in loss. So instead of bounding in with gifts and flowers I readied my camera gear to photograph two ceremonies. The first was the naming ceremony for their beautiful sleeping Angel and the second, which no parent should ever have to experience, was Angel’s memorial service the next day. They were the hardest things of my photographic career, but they pushed me over the edge into becoming a Heartfelt Photographer. This was a goal that I have had ever since I started photography and Angie gave me the push, telling me I was ready. Thank you Angie 🙂

Pregnancy loss is a taboo topic, but Adam and Angie want you to know Angel’s story, not only because she is their daughter, but they hope that increasing awareness and encouraging discussions around loss will help other parents on the journey.

2013 has been kinder and exactly 11 months to the day after Angel’s birth, Crystal was born. A beautiful healthy baby girl. A daughter for Adam and Angie, and a little sister for Angel to love and protect.

Angie and Adam are already excellent parents, they have done wonderful, incredible things in Angel’s name. These include:

  • an Angels bear drive for Pregnancy Loss Australia which raised over $2,000. This purchased 100 Angel bears in memory of Angel that will be given to other families who suffer a loss offering them comfort so they are not alone and do not have to leave the hospital with empty arms;
  • organising a team of runners for the City to Casino marathon to support Heartfelt. The amount raised in memory of Angel was $2,000 and the total amount raised by all of the families participating in memory of their own losses was a staggering $7,886 for Heartfelt; and
  • donating a cuddle cot to the Hobart Private Hospital on Angel’s 1st birthday. This represents a value of around $4,000 and allows for angel babies to stay in the room with their parents while staying cool. These are a huge comfort and support for angel parents.

I have absolutely no doubt that they will continue to wow me in years to come and will be AMAZING parents to Crystal. I am sure that you will all join me in wishing them a lifetime of love and happiness. Congratulations Adam and Angie. Crystal is DIVINE! I cannot wait to watch her grow and to document her life.

Introducing Baby Travis at 9 days old | Hobart newborn photographer, Katinka Smith

Master Travis was born on the 11 June 2013. He is an adorable little man. I had the pleasure of photographing him when he was just 9 days old. He was a very alert little man, but I am more persistent than he was stubborn and we got a great series of images from his session. Please enjoy this small selection from the session and the slideshow which contains special messages to Travis from his mummy and daddy.

Beautiful 11 day old Baby Thomas and his family | Hobart Newborn photographer, Katinka Smith

I love to photograph newborn babies, they are so new, cuddly and super sweet. I got to spend a lot of quality time with Mr Tom, how lucky am I!. This lucky baby has a beautiful big brother and a gorgeous mum and dad. I don’t photograph on green very often…in fact I have had this green wrap for ages and hadn’t used it. When mum said she wanted green, I got very excited and pulled it out! Yes, I think I quite like green!!

Newborn baby Jacey | Hobart newborn photographer, Katinka Smith.

On Anzac day I got to meet and photograph beautiful Miss Jacey. Jacey was just under two weeks old, which is the BEST time to photograph newborns to get this style of photos (after this age they begin to stretch out, lose their flexibility and startle easier when asleep). I had a great time at this session and we got so many different setups and poses in, it was wonderful. Mum and dad are long time friends of ours, so it was wonderful and an honour to be a part of this special time in their lives. Thank you John and Karen!.

One of my favourite poses is the chin in hands pose. We got to do this in this session and right at the bottom of this post is a before and after so that you can see how this pose is done safely

Here is their story, I will advise that there is a tissue warning for the slideshow, don’t say I didn’t warn you! 🙂 (it may not work on mobiles – sorry!)

Chin in hands pose – How to pose this image safely. Photograph two separate images and blend them together in photoshop. This way there is no unnecessary stress placed on baby’s spine and neck.

The final edited image from Photoshop. Yes this takes time to edit, but to me, it is worth the extra time in photoshop to ensure the safety of my tiniest clients.IMG_0131__ks copy_web
