I met up with Merri very briefly on Monday night for a ‘school leavers photoshoot’ to get some quick portraits of her looking stunning in her LOVELY dress before she went along to her Leavers dinner. If you knew me before I had children you knew I was a dog person. I LOVE my poochies and I have two furry firstborns of my own. Before I had children I was a dog trainer and I LOVED meeting and getting to know lots of different poochies and their human slaves ;-)! When I was pregnant with my first child I had to leave off the dog training and I do miss it dearly. So I love it when I can photograph poochies in a session, usually they are part of the family, welcoming in the first born ‘skin kids’, so it was a first for me to have a session exclusively for the fur children! I loved this session and it was a pleasure to finally meet Kittila and Luna, two little fur babies that I have watched grow up via facebook!

Deanne and Brad – Married! | Hobart wedding photographer, Katinka Smith

Weddings and Love,

On 14 November 2014 at Frogmore Creek in the Coal Valley, Tasmania, a beautiful and intimate wedding was had. Brad and Deanne were married in the presence of their close family and friends and it was lovely. The rain threatened all morning and finally sprinkled us during the ceremony – but the Bride and Groom weathered it in style.

The cloud cover was every photographer’s dream for a midday wedding and it meant that we got to utilise most of the venue for photos as well. The staff at the Winery were WONDERFUL! Very friendly and not one detail was overlooked. Maxine Lowry was their fabulous celebrant ensuring that everything ran smoothly.

Thank you Deanne and Brad for inviting me to photograph your wedding, it was a lovely event!

Thank you also to Ron Franks for assisting me with the wedding and photographing his very first wedding – he did a GREAT job!

Weddings and Love

8 November 2014, Tasmanian Royal Botanical Gardens, One girl, one ring, 20 signs, lots of family and friends, one unsuspecting guy…A PROPOSAL!

Josh’s brother, Simon had one task ‘please occupy your brother for the morning’. So he did, he took him for a mammoth mountain bike ride on the North South Track (23km for those not familiar with it) followed by a leisurely ride from Tolosa St, Glenorchy into Hobart (just another lazy 20km). It was pretty warm on Saturday, but thankfully cooled off right before the surprise proposal was scheduled to begin.

Josh had no idea, and here is what was awaiting him when he finally arrived….

Introducing sweet baby Felix | Hobart newborn photographer, Katinka Smith

I recently had the pleasure of photographing gorgeous newborn Felix in his home with his mum Abby and dad Nick. It was clear that Abby and Nick had put so much effort into the nursery that I made sure to include some images in their set – I love nurseries that are created with love and effort like this! I’m the first to admit that I am seriously lacking in the interior design space, so I admire others that are so clever!

When Nick came out in a shirt for the parent shots with a logo on it my first thought was ‘Um Nick, logos are distracting’, and then I quickly realised exactly what I was looking at – ART! I have seen Nick’s work before, but I didn’t make the connection until that moment. Nick Hills is an awesome Tasmanian artist and the design on the back of his shirt is one of his designs – btw, you can buy them, check out the Tassie clothing company ‘Burial Brand’ HERE for designs by Nick Hills and other local Australian artists! So of course his shirt with his design HAD to feature in photos with his son, how could it not! So we especially did the pose with Felix’s head resting on Nick’s shoulder so that two special things that he has created could be featured in the one photo together. 🙂

Introducing Miss Mila | Hobart newborn photographer, Katinka Smith

I can’t tell you how much I love to incorporate my clients homes into their photo sessions – especially in newborn sessions. So many of you take so much time and care to carefully plan a special space to welcome your beautiful newborn baby home to. You have special sleeping arrangements that work just for you – and that may be fleeting, like a Bassinet in the master bedroom or a special cot. Our children are babies for a short time and just as I think it is important to capture our little people at this special time, I also love to capture their surroundings, just as it is right at that moment in time. The beauty of being able to photograph your newborn baby in their own home, rather than in a studio environment, is that I can immerse myself in your environment and incorporate these elements into your images – which I LOVE to do. Many families have beautiful heirloom items that have been handed down and were often that precious sleeping space carefully chosen, or made, a few short decades ago by those excited expectant first time parents, who are now anticipating their first grandchild – who will also sleep in that same special bassinet or cot.

Memories and nostalgia are what connects us to our past, are a big part of who we are, are what binds us to the people that we love and are, after-all, one of the reasons why we invest in photography – to create memories that we can physically hold onto. I love it when I can present to my clients the full picture of who they are – inclusive of their home.

A few weeks ago I visited Tim, Chantelle and their three children in their home. First off we set about capturing some studio portraits with the portable studio, and then we went outside to play in their ‘backyard’!
